On Thursday night, the Houston Cougars delivered a 36-10 shellacking to Lamar Jackson and the Louisville Cardinals, delivering deadly blow to Louisville’s postseason hopes.
But the win also did something else; it continued Houston head coach Tom Herman’s incredible streak as an underdog.
The win over Louisville marked Herman’s second win as a double-digit underdog this season, fifth straight win as an underdog at Houston and his eleventh win in a row overall when coaching as an underdog.
It’s truly remarkable.
The impressive streak dates back to his time as offensive coordinator at Ohio State.
The fine folks at The Score detailed Herman’s current streak:
YEAR | TEAM (SPREAD) | OPPONENT | SCORE |
---|---|---|---|
2012 | Ohio State (+2) | Michigan State | 17-16 |
2012 | Ohio State (+1) | Wisconsin | 21-14 |
2014 | Ohio State (+4) | Michigan State | 49-37 |
2014 | Ohio State (+4) | Wisconson | 59-0 |
2014 | Ohio State (+7.5) | Alabama | 42-35 |
2014 | Ohio State (+6) | Oregon | 42-20 |
2015 | Houston (+13.5) | Louisville | 34-31 |
2015 | Houston (+1.5) | Navy | 52-31 |
2015 | Houston (+7.5) | Florida State | 38-24 |
2016 | Houston (+13) | Oklahoma | 33-23 |
2016 | Houston (+14.5) | Louisville | 36-10 |
After Houston suffered a couple of losses earlier this year, Herman’s stock seemed to fall off a bit.
However, after the Cougars’ dominant win over the No. 5 teamin the nation — the team’s second top five win of the year — it’s safe to say that Herman will once again be one of the most highly-coveted coaches this offseason.
