Report: Luke Fickell hired as new Cincinnati football coach

The Cincinnati Bearcats have reportedly settled on their next head football coach.

On Saturday morning, Adam Rittenberg of ESPN reported Cincinnati is set to hire Ohio State Buckeyes co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell. An agreement was reportedly reached on Friday night.

Fickell has been a member of the Buckeyes coaching staff since 2002, when he served under Jim Tressel.

From the report:

Cincinnati is hiring Ohio State defensive coordinator Luke Fickell as its next coach, sources tell ESPN. The two sides reached an agreement late last night, and an official announcement from Cincinnati is expected shortly. Fickell has coached at his alma mater since 2002, and served as Ohio State’s head coach in 2011, following Jim Tressel’s resignation.

Prior to joining the Buckeyes staff, Fickell served as the defensive line coach at Akron, so he continues to keep his Ohio ties strong.

The news has to be music to the ears of Western Michigan fans, who can now feel confident that head coach PJ Fleck will be returning to Kalamazoo.
