Morehead State basketball coach Sean Woods resigns

Embattled coach Sean Woods resigned from his post of head coach of the Morehead State basketball program amid allegations of assault against two of his players, including head-butting one. Woods was serving an indefinite suspension and had missed the past five games as a result.

He was officially suspended on Nov. 22nd due to “unspecified complaints” filed against him.

Woods, who was a star at Kentucky in the 90’s, was suspended four years ago for similar behavior. Woods was seen berating player Devon Atkinson on the bench, allegedly making contact with him in the process. This suspension appears far more serious, however, and criminal charges could be in the works.

Earlier this week, police in Evansville, Indiana filed a battery charge against Woods.

He has a hearing set for Feb. 9.

In the affidavit, two players have said their altercations with Woods became physical. Malik Maitland claims to have been backhanded in the chest, while Soufiyane Diakite says the coach shoved him twice during a game; he also claims to have seen the coach strike Malik Maitland.

The Morehead State Eagles are currently 2-7 and have lost every game since Woods’ suspension.
