The Texas Tech football program will be thin at quarterback entering the offseason.
After star signal-caller Patrick Mahomes declared for the draft on Tuesday, it was announced that backup quarterback Jeff Duffey has been suspended for the spring and summer semesters.
The suspension was imposed by the university, but few details were made available.
“I can tell you he is suspended only for those two semesters,” school spokesperson Chris Cook told Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. “He is eligible to return in the fall.”
Duffey is expected to compete for a chance to be the primary backup in 2017, with Nic Shimonek as the heavy favorite to replace Mahomes as the starter.
