Austin Peay basketball coach takes leave of absence for cancer battle

Austin Peay basketball coach Dave Loos is set to take a leave of absence.

On Thursday, the Governors announced Loos is taking a leave of absence to resume chemotherapy to treat a cancerous lymph node. Loos had a malignant tumor on his colon removed in July, which led to the discovery of a cancerous growth on a lymph node.

Loos has been undergoing chemotherapy since the late summer.

“Our primary concern right now is the health of Coach Loos,” said Austin Peay athletics director Ryan Ivey in a statement on the team’s official website. “Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with him and his family and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Loos is the all-time wins leader at Austin Peay with an overall record of 414-403 in 27 seasons.

In Loos’ absence, assistant coach Jay Bowen will take over head coaching duties. Bowen will begin leading the Govs on Thursday night against Tennessee Tech.

“I have complete confidence in Coach Bowen and our entire coaching staff to lead our program during this time,” Ivey said. “They are hard-working, intelligent basketball coaches who have the respect of our student-athletes and department and will keep us competing at a high level.”

Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech are set to tip-off at 8:30 p.m. ET at Hooper Eblen Arena.
