Jake Spavital will get his chance to be a head coach at some point, but not yet.
After being appointed the interim head coach at Cal last season, there were some inklings that Spavital might get the chance to do the job long-term. Those hopes were stamped out with the hiring of Wisconsin defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox.
Spavital won’t find himself unemployed, though.
A rising star in the college coaching ranks, the Mountaineers were interested in bringing him into the fold and extended the position of offensive coordinator to him. At only 31 years old, Spavital has risen quickly and continues to make friends in high places.
Spavital, Justin Wilcox were finalists for Cal HC. Source said WVU waited for Bears, who picked JW.
Spavital will sign a three-year deal.

After serving as a graduate assistant under Dana Holgorsen at Houston and Oklahoma State, it was Holgorsen that offered him the job at West Virginia. He will have to find ways to get production out of an offense that has lost a lot of talent to graduation and the draft.
