Ronald Gasser, the 55-year-old man who shot and killed former USC star Joe McKnight, entered a not guilty plea on Monday to a second-degree murder charge.
Gasser was indicted on the charge last week and is currently jailed on $750,000 bond.
The defense is claiming Gasser’s actions were justified and that he is not guilty of the second-degree murder charge which carries a mandatory life sentence.
”It was a case of justifiable homicide,” defense attorney Gerard Archer said at the hearing, via theScore.com.
Before joining the USC Trojans in 2006, McKnight was ranked as the top running back recruit in the natin. He letter went on to play for the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL, along with the Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League.
