Last season, North Carolina came painfully close to winning another National Championship for its storied college basketball program.
Finishing as the runners-up in the tournament, the leaders of that team will be paid the ultimate tribute prior to an important ACC matchup against Virginia. During halftime of their game on Saturday, North Carolina will hang the jersey’s of Marcus Paige and Brice Johnson in the rafters of the Dean Dome.
UNC posted a sneak peak of what the banners will look like:
While both players were seniors last season, they traversed very different paths to get to where they were. Paige, who found success early in his career at UNC and was named as a Second-Team All American and First-Team All ACC in 2014, became mired in a shooting slump before breaking out for most of his final season.
Paige scored 21 points including what would have been the game winner had it not been for buzzer-beating heroics by Villanova’s Kris Jenkins. Paige currently plays for the D-League affiliate of the Utah Jazz and was selected in the second round of the NBA draft.
Johnson, meanwhile, was an absolute terror to anyone who tried to guard him. Averaging a double-double for the season, 17 points and 10 rebounds, he was selected the first round by the Los Angeles Clippers.
