Iowa State defensive back Mike Johnson has been suspended.
It was an inevitable move after Johnson was arrested on a charge of domestic assault strangulation with injury. Johnson allegedly strangled his girlfriend with both hands after an altercation broke out over a social media post, according to the Des Moines Register.
Iowa State has issued a statement on the arrest and suspension.
“We are aware of Mike Johnson’s arrest and allegations associated with his arrest,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said.
“Our program has zero tolerance for domestic violence. Mike has been suspended from all team activities, including practice, under the student-athlete code of conduct policy as we gather more information. His long-term status with the team will be determined once we gain more facts.”
Johnson claims he was holding his girlfriend back during the fight after she attempted to destroy some of his electronics, including his cell phone. Johnson says he put pressure on her to keep her on the couch.
