USF football player Hassan Childs was injured during a road rage incident over the weekend.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Tampa police said Childs was an aggressor in the incident. Jovanni Jimenez, the man who shot Childs, alleges Childs pointed a gun at Jiminez and his wife. It was at that time that Jiminez says he pulled his gun and shot the senior safety in self defense.
Childs was shot three times in the arm and torso, but is in stable condition.
“Thankfully Hassan is in stable condition and being well cared for, and no one else was injured,” USF head coach Charlie Strong said in a statement. “There is an ongoing investigation of the incident and we are in the process of gathering further information.
“Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, we cannot comment further at this time.”
Childs has previously been arrested on misdemeanor charges, but has no official criminal record.
The story is developing.
