Last season, there were a pair of tragic loses to some of baseball’s rising stars. Jose Fernandez of the Miami Marlins and Yordano Ventura of the Kansas City Royals both passed unexpectedly.
While the Marlins have honored Jose Fernandez’s memory in a number of ways, the Royals honored the memory of their fallen teammate and friend prior to the Royals home opener on Monday.
With teary eyes, the Kansas City players, fans and front office were moved by a saxophonic rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

Ventura’s tribute also included a speech from teammate Eric Hosmer, and a series of highlights from the promising 25-year-old’s brief career. Often known for his fiery demeanor on the mound, Ventura was beloved by the fans of the Kansas City ball club.
In one of the saddest stretches of memory in Major League Baseball, Ventura joined the league of players who were lost before scratching the surface of their potential.

Ventura’s untimely death was the result of an automobile accident in January.
