The 2017 Kentucky Derby is finally here to kickoff Triple Crown season and that means only one thing: it’s time for everyone to throw back some mint juleps for the big day.
The Mint Julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs with nearly 120,000 of the drinks being sold over the course of a two-day period for the Derby and Kentucky Oaks.
But hey, when you’ve been a tradition for nearly a century, how can anyone turn it down? And more importantly: how can you make one at home for the 143rd Run for the Roses?
The official recipe for the Kentucky Derby’s Mint Julep cocktail can be seen below, via KentuckyDerby.com:
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cups water
- Sprigs of fresh mint
- Crushed ice
- Old Forester Straight Bourbon Whisky
- Silver Julep Cups
Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Old Forester Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.
