The Mississippi State basketball program got some bad news this weekend when they learned one of their prized freshman recruits got himself into some trouble with the law.
NBC Sports is reporting that Nick Weatherspoon was arrested for DUI over the weekend in Oktibbeha County, early Sunday morning.
Reports indicate he also ran a red light.
Fortunately, nobody was hurt as a result of poor decision making, but there is no doubt that the news comes as a blow to the basketball team. Weatherspoon was expected to be a major contributor on the floor this season. The freshman was one of the most touted in the country, and held offers from a number of prestigious programs before decided Mississippi State.
Weatherspoon was ranked the No. 28 overall player in the country, No. 6 at his position and the best prospect in Mississippi.
Mississippi State coach Ben Howland released a statement through the school saying he is “aware of the situation, and I’ve talked to Nick and his family. This is a matter we will handle internally, and at this time I have no further comment.”
There is no news on what criminal actions will be pursued by the country, or what disciplinary actions will be taken by the university.
