ESPN's David Pollack Makes College Football Playoff Picks

With the college football season right around the corner, experts are starting to weigh in on who they think will make it to the College Football Playoff.
There are the heavy hitters who are finding themselves on most lists, and then there are those on David Pollack’s list. While it includes a couple of the names you’d expect, it’s also got a few surprises.
On Wednesday, he tweeted out his picks and followed them up with his reasoning.

Interestingly, the Stanford Cardinal makes its inaugural appearance in the tournament, and Clemson returns.
USC is considered a heavy favorite to come out of the PAC 12 this season. Led by Heisman favorite Sam Darnold and an experienced cast of supporting players, the Trojans are expected to separate themselves from the pack in their conference. So why does Pollack think that the Cardinal pulls off an upset and makes it to the tourney over the Trojans?

The other surprise in his top four is the inclusion of Clemson. It’s not too often that the defending National Champions would be considered an underdog to repeat, but that’s where Clemson finds themselves this year. The Tigers lost a lot of players to the draft last season, none more important than the best player in program history Deshaun Watson. Pollack thinks their defense gets them there, despite Florida State ranked second in the country to start the season and a heavy favorite to come out of the ACC.
