The Hamilton Tiger-Cats were in the headlines for all of the wrong reasons on Monday.
After reports surfaced that head coach June Jones was willing to give disgraced ex-Baylor coach Art Briles a job on his coaching staff, the backlash was immediate.
That forced the CFL team to decide against bringing Briles on board before releasing a statement on Tuesday morning.
In the statement, the Tiger-Cats admitted a “serious mistake” in considering Briles.
“We made a large and serious mistake. We want to apologize to our fans, corporate partners and the Canadian Football League. It has been a difficult season and we are searching for answers. This is clearly not one of them,” team owner Bob Young said.
“We have listened, we are reviewing our decision-making processes and we will learn. We will go on. We want to thank our fans, partners and the CFL for their help and support.”
The Tiger-Cats currently sit in last place in the CFL’s East Division with a record of 0-8, so they’re used to taking L’s in 2017.
