The first full weekend of the 2017 college football season is here and we already have our first targeting ejection.
On Thursday night against UCF, the Butch Jones era began at FIU and it only took a few minutes for one of the Panthers’ top defenders to get sent to the locker room.
FIU defensive back Niko Gonzalez led with his helmet as UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton was sliding to the turf following a run.
The result was a flag for targeting and automatic ejection.
Here’s the play:

The ejection came four minutes into the game.
Some on social media disagreed with the call, but the referees reviewed the play and ultimately determined targeting was the right call.
FIU currently trails UCF, 14-7 midway through the first quarter.
