It might not be the rivalry that instantly springs to mind when you think about legendary college football hatred. But there appears to be no love between fans of St. John’s and of St. Thomas.
Both sides plan to pile into Target Field in Minnesota to watch the 87th matchup between the two sides.
As many as 35,000 tickets have already been sold, according to the Associated Press. That figure could grow to eventually double the previous record of 17,535 set last season between UW-Oshkosh at UW-Whitewater.
That record broke the previous mark that was also held by St.Johns’s-St. Thomas.
If attendance is as expected, a regular season, D-III matchup would have drawn more fans than 20 of the 40 D-I bowl games last season. St. Thomas coach Glenn Caruso isn’t taking the record setting excitement for granted.
“If you can’t get genuinely excited about this opportunity, then what are we doing coaching this sport?” Caruso told the AP.
St. John’s leads the all-time series 51-34-1, having won 16 of 17 meetings between 1993 and 2009.
