Tom Herman was one of the most highly sought after coaches on the open market this offseason. He landed in Texas, where football coaching careers go to die.
After losing 51-41 against the Maryland Terrapins on opening weekend, the turmoil machine started kicking into gear. It came from an unexpected source, though, Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer.
Herman coached under Meyer as his offensive coordinator and the two were believed to have a good working relationship. That is until CBS Sports quoted Meyer as saying the following:
“It’s like a new generation of excuse, (Herman) said, ‘I can’t rub pixie dust on this thing.’ He got a dose of reality. Maryland just scored 51 points on you.”
Meyer was referring to comments that Herman made suggesting he couldn’t rub “fairy dust” on the Texas program and make it’s problems go away. Those comments drove Meyer “insane,” though he Ohio State football coach is now saying he was being misrepresented by those quotes.
“I texted him,” Meyer said. “That (blasting Herman) was not what I meant at all. It’s why I don’t do interviews.”
It appears it’s all good and gravy between Texas and Ohio State now. The Longhorns have bigger problems on their hands anyway. They’ve started the season 1-2 with their only victory coming against San Jose State. They managed to take a talented USC team into overtime before losing 27-24.
