UPDATE: Showtime officials announced on Thursday that the event officially recorded 4.3 million pay-per-view buys.

Just what is the accurate number of Mayweather-McGregor PPV buys?
According to a new report from Boxing Scene, the Aug. 26 superfight between undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor came in at 4.4 million buys on pay-per-view.
If that number proves to be true, it falls short of the pay-per-view record which Mayweather and McGregor were aiming for.
The current pay-per-view record is 4.6 million buys for the highly-anticipated Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight in 2015.

The report says an official announcement could be coming later this week.
While 4.4 million would fall short of the record, it is still a wild success — especially considering the bout featured a man who had never professionally boxed in his career. And fans got their money worth, too.
Many fans expected Mayweather would run right through McGregor, but the Irishman was able to hold his own throughout the early rounds.
Eventually, fatigue became a factor and Mayweather pulled away before ultimately ending the bout via TKO in Round 10.
