Lamar Jackson ran away with the Heisman Trophy last season. If you looked past his performance with the Louisville Cardinals, you were left with a pack of uninspiring options.
The same is slowly turning out to be true this year.
After five weeks, Saquon Barkley is starting to separate himself from the rest of the competition.
On Monday, the Las Vegas SuperBook released its latest Heisman Trophy odds with the Penn State star running back leading the way.
Barkley undoubtedly stands as the best player in college football this season. Baker Mayfield is riding his coat tails, though, and sits at impressive 2-1 odds to win the hardware. From there, we have a steep drop to Lamar Jackson at 8-1, and Mason Rudolph at 10-1 round out the list of realistic options.
Sam Darnold is surprisingly included on this list, despite his poor play thus far. After failing to lead USC to a victory over Washington State, his chances of winning the greatest individual award, as well as the chances of getting his team into the College Football Playoff dimmed significantly.
Once considered the odds-on favorite, his inclusion here seems more like a gift than anything else.
All bets are off if Barkley keeps up this level of play. He’ll break away from the pack regardless of what anyone else does. Right now, it’s his award to lose.
