Baker Mayfield is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, but there are three quarterbacks consistently ranked ahead of him on NFL Draft boards — UCLA’s Josh Rosen, USC’s Sam Darnold and Josh Allen of Wyoming.
But if you look at what NFL executives are saying, that may be a big mistake.
In a recent article on NFL.com, five personnel executives sounded off on whether Allen or Mayfield will be a better pro.
The two quarterbacks will both be putting their skills on display next week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama so everything could change after a closer evaluation, but for now many believe Mayfield is the more talented prospect.
In fact, one NFL executive compared the former Sooner to New Orleans Saints star Drew Brees.
“I know he has a different demeanor but I see a lot of Drew Brees in Baker Mayfield,” the executive said. He was one out of four who favored Mayfield. Only five were polled.
Another added, “This is pretty simple. Allen is bigger and has a better arm but Mayfield is better in just about every other area. The difference in accuracy is what jumps out the most.”
Coverage of the Senior Bowl begins on the NFL Network Jan. 23 and runs through Jan. 27, when the game will be aired at 2:30 p.m. ET.
