UMBC — The University of Maryland, Baltimore County — did the unthinkable during the 2018 NCAA Tournament, knocking off No. 1 overall seed Virginia in the opening round. It was the first time in the history of March Madness that a No. 16 seed was able to knock off a No. 1 seed.
Over the weekend, the Retrievers pulled out some magic again.
During a Friday night men’s lacrosse game between UMBC and No. 1 Albany, the Retrievers proved to be the top dogs and came away with a stunning 11-7 victory over the Great Danes.
UMBC entered the match on a four-game losing streak and with a lowly 2-7 record, but they proved that Retrievers teams will always show up when it’s against the No. 1 teams. Albany, meanwhile, was undefeated entering the game and riding a 31-game regular season conference winning streak.
Naturally, UMBC’s Twitter account brought out some heat to celebrate the big win.
