UNC-Greensboro has revamped their look. The Spartans are going through a rebranding effort and unveiled a new logo on Tuesday, Aug. 7. The new logo will be used on team uniforms and merchandise like t-shirts, sweatshirts, and banners. UNCG has been known as the Spartans since 1967.
With the new logo, the profile of a Spartan head is placed atop the “UNCG” letter marks.
The rebranding effort also includes a tweak in the school colors. The blue and gold have a bolder look, while the university added gray as an official third color.
“UNCG Athletics had a record-breaking year in 2017-18, winning five conference titles, achieving an all-time high student-athlete GPA of 3.23 and generating incredible buzz across our community and among our fans,” UNCG Director of Athletics Kim Record said in a media release. “As we enter the second year of our Spartan Way strategic plan, we believe these spirit marks will spark even more pride across our fanbase and distinctively promote UNCG as a leader in Greensboro and the Southern Conference, while also increasing our national visibility.”
The school also unveiled new secondary logos and wordmarks.
“Last year we saw record enrollment of nearly 20,000 students; we graduated our biggest-ever class; we were one of just two schools to meet or exceed all UNC System performance metrics; and we delivered a record five Southern Conference Championships,” said UNC Greensboro Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam. “Now, we have to seize the moment and capitalize on our momentum. A bold, imaginative new look and feel will help energize our campus, inspire our community and build on the excitement that now surrounds UNCG.”
UNCG has also retired its mascot, Spiro, and will be unveiling a new mascot in the fall.
