Sean McVay Pranks Kliff Kingsbury With Tampering Joke

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is the talk of the NFL. The 33-year-old head coach took his team to the Super Bowl in only his second season and is already one of the top coaches in the league. McVay is also an accomplished prankster as he pranked new Arizona Cardinals head coach, according to a recent appearance onĀ ESPN’s “The Adam Schefter Podcast.”
The two young head coaches were eating dinner with reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes when the prank occurred. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback played for Kingsbury when he was at Texas Tech. Having dinner with your former college coach is not a crime, but it is a little complicated when the coach joins an NFL team.
The prank began with McVay changing the name of a mutual friend of himself and Kingsbury to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. The friend texted McVay that he could not believe McVay was having dinner with Kingsbury and Mahomes. He also said that McVay was tampering by having dinner with the two of them and both coaches would be losing draft picks.
The Rams are fresh off a Super Bowl appearance, so losing draft picks would not be the end of the world for them. The Cardinals, on the other hand, have the top pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and have numerous holes to fill on the roster. McVay showed Kingsbury the text, which made the new head coach look upset.
“We have a mutual friend that I put his name in my phone as (NFL commissioner) Roger Goodell,” McVay told Schefter. “I had this friend send me a text saying, ‘I can’t believe you’re at dinner with Kingsbury and Mahomes. You know better than this. This is tampering. You’re both losing picks.’
“I showed Kliff the text, and he saw a ghost. I said, ‘You better call (Cardinals general manager) Steve Keim right away.’ He said, ‘I thought I was going to lose the No. 1 overall pick.'”
It is uncommon for coaches to lose picks due to tampering. Kingsbury’s situation is worse as he has no experience at the NFL level and he would become the punchline of many NFL jokes for years to come. McVay told Kingsbury that he should call Cardinals’ GM Steven Keim right away to ensure that the Cardinals did not lose their top pick.
Kingsbury believed that he had lost the number one pick in the 2019 NFL Draft until McVay told him that it was all a prank. The new Cardinals head coach was relieved that it was only a prank and promised that he would get back at McVay soon. The Rams head coach did not need April Fool’s Day to pull off an epic prank, which could spark a new coaching rivalry between him and Kingsbury.
