NCAA Committee Approves Single Transfer Window

The NCAA is streamlining how players can transfer between schools, with the Oversight Committee voting Thursday to recommend a single 10-day transfer window in January. This would replace the current two-window system that gives athletes separate opportunities in winter and spring.

If approved by the Administrative Committee before Oct. 1, the new system would kick in by January 2026. Players would be able to enter the portal starting Jan. 2, with the window closing just 10 days later.

Here’s where it gets interesting for college football fans.

This timing creates a direct collision with the 12-team College Football Playoff schedule. Players could enter the portal less than 24 hours after the quarterfinal games wrap up. The transfer window would then remain open during the semifinal round (Jan. 8-9) and close about a week before the National Championship game on Jan. 19.

The current system already overlaps with playoff games – the winter window opens before the first round – but at least provides that second chance for players to transfer after seeing their role during spring practice.

This change would dramatically reduce transfer opportunities. Players currently have a total of 30 days to enter the portal across both windows. The new model slashes that to just 10 days.

The committee didn’t stop there.

They’re also recommending December become a complete recruiting dead period — meaning coaches couldn’t have in-person contact with recruits during a crucial month when many programs are finalizing their classes.

High school prospects would feel the impact too. The committee wants to push back when recruits can first receive written financial aid offers or NIL-related benefits. Currently, those offers can come as early as Aug. 1 before their senior year, but the new rule would delay that until Nov. 15.

These changes represent a significant shift in how programs will manage their rosters and how players will make transfer decisions — all while the playoff games are happening.
