ASU star WR Tyson out with hamstring injury vs Houston

Arizona State will be without star receiver Jordyn Tyson for this week’s matchup against Houston after he suffered a hamstring injury during the Sun Devils’ win over Texas Tech, head coach Kenny Dillingham confirmed.

Dillingham didn’t give a specific timeline for Tyson’s return to the No. 24 Sun Devils lineup.

“I’m not ready to comment on that right now,” Dillingham told reporters. “This is something where I’m trying to protect him from himself. That dude is a competitor out there. Playing at the end of last game, making plays. So this is something where we are making a decision to protect him from him a little bit cause he’s such a competitor.”

The Sun Devils’ offense has leaned heavily on Tyson all season. No other ASU wide receiver has more than eight catches on the year — a stark contrast to Tyson’s production.

Tyson gutted through the hamstring issue during the second half against Texas Tech, finishing with 10 catches for 105 yards and a touchdown in the upset win.

He’s a game-changer.

The Colorado transfer has been nothing short of electric this season, hauling in 57 passes for 628 yards and eight touchdowns through seven games. NFL scouts have taken notice — Tyson is widely projected as a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

This isn’t the first time injury has sidelined the talented wideout. After transferring from Colorado following the 2022 season, Tyson broke out during Arizona State’s surprising College Football Playoff run last year with 75 catches, 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns. However, a collarbone injury against Arizona in the regular season finale kept him out of ASU’s playoff appearance.

Who steps up in Tyson’s absence?

With Tyson sidelined, the Sun Devils will need to find production elsewhere. Running back Raleek Brown (25 catches, 139 yards) and tight end Chamon Metayer (21 catches, 226 yards) have been reliable safety valves in the passing game. Running back Kyson Brown has added eight catches for 72 yards.

Derek Eusebio — who ranks second among ASU wide receivers with just eight receptions — managed only two catches for six yards against Texas Tech last week. Someone in this receiving corps will need to emerge quickly.

Despite the injury setback, Arizona State (5-2, 3-1 Big 12) remains firmly in contention for a Big 12 championship game berth. The Sun Devils don’t face another ranked opponent for the remainder of the regular season, though trips to Houston this weekend and Iowa State on November 1 loom as their biggest remaining tests.
