Lane Kiffin Hints Trinidad Chambliss May Follow Him to LSU

Lane Kiffin has officially taken the LSU job, ending weeks of speculation that had the college football world buzzing. Now that the dust has settled, Kiffin’s return to social media might be giving us our first hint at his recruiting plans — and it looks like he might be eyeing Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss.

Kiffin’s Monday social media post raised eyebrows across the SEC. While it could be innocent, his history of calculated online messaging suggests otherwise.

“Exhale, have the best Monday ever, #GodsPlan,” Kiffin wrote on “X” with a Trinidad and Tobago flag and Tiger emoji.

That Trinidad and Tobago flag isn’t a random choice. Ole Miss fans have been bringing those red and blue flags to games all season to support Chambliss, who’s become a fan favorite in Oxford. The connection seems pretty clear — Kiffin might be signaling his interest in bringing Chambliss to Baton Rouge when the transfer portal opens next month.

It makes sense. Chambliss has been electric this season.

The former Division II transfer from Ferris State has put up 3,486 yards of total offense and 24 touchdowns heading into the College Football Playoff. He’s been a perfect fit in Kiffin’s offense and helped Ole Miss to its first 11-win regular season ever. With coaches regularly bringing their favorite players along during coaching changes, a Kiffin-Chambliss reunion at LSU isn’t far-fetched.

Chambliss Waiting on NCAA Eligibility Decision

The situation gets more interesting because Chambliss isn’t necessarily done at Ole Miss. He filed for an extra year of eligibility with the NCAA and could hear back as early this week, according to The Clarion-Ledger. After Friday’s Egg Bowl win over Mississippi State, Chambliss acknowledged how valuable another season would be.

“That would be great for me to get another year,” he said. “Another year in the offense, having the spring and just developing more on this level. That would definitely be huge.”

The eligibility question is complicated.

Chambliss played four seasons at Division II Ferris State before transferring to Ole Miss. His case hinges on getting a retroactive redshirt for 2022, when he appeared in just two games. The problem? Division II didn’t even have the same redshirt rules as Division I until this year.

Under normal NCAA rules, players get five academic years to play four seasons. Chambliss redshirted in 2021 at Ferris State, served as a backup for two years, then broke out in 2024 — which caught Kiffin’s attention and led to his transfer to Ole Miss.

Meanwhile, Kiffin told ESPN he wanted to coach Ole Miss through the playoff, but athletic director Keith Carter wouldn’t allow it.

“At the end of the day, that’s his decision and I totally respect that,” Kiffin said. “I understand that decision. I just totally wish the team the best of luck, wish that I was coaching, but understand that it was a very challenging position for him and the chancellor to be in. Really hope they play really well and hope they win the national championship.”

Kiffin — who went 55-19 in six seasons at Ole Miss — also revealed he was asked not to attend Sunday’s team meeting where defensive coordinator Pete Golding was promoted to head coach.

If Chambliss gets his extra year and decides to follow Kiffin to LSU, it would be a massive transfer portal victory for the Tigers. But for now, Ole Miss fans will have to wait and see if their quarterback stays put or follows his former coach to a division rival.
