Former Virginia wide receiver Jahmal Edrine was arrested Thursday on charges of rape and abduction – both felonies – following an investigation that started back in August.
The Albemarle County Police Department began looking into the case on Aug. 25 after a victim reported being sexually assaulted the day before, according to police. A grand jury reviewed the case and returned indictments on Feb. 2.
Edrine’s being held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
Police said they’re still investigating. Both charges carry serious legal consequences as felonies under Virginia law.
The timing’s notable given Edrine’s role in Virginia’s historic 2025 season. He’d transferred in from Purdue and put up solid numbers — 46 catches for 564 yards and a touchdown, making him the team’s second-leading receiver. The Cavaliers won a program-record 11 games before falling to Duke in overtime in the ACC Championship Game.
Virginia confirmed Edrine’s no longer enrolled at the school. In a statement to Wahoos247, chief communications officer Brian Coy said the university’s aware of what happened and will cooperate fully with law enforcement. He added that federal student privacy laws prevent them from saying more.
The 6-foot-3, 221-pound receiver from Fort Lauderdale had bounced around a bit before landing at Virginia. He started at Florida Atlantic in 2021-22, then headed to Purdue for what should’ve been two seasons. An injury during fall camp wiped out his entire 2023 season there; he played in 2024 before transferring to Charlottesville.
Across his time at FAU and Purdue, Edrine caught 63 passes — meaning his single season at Virginia nearly matched his production from those previous stops combined.
