53 people were injured in Saturday night’s attack on The Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, which also left 49 people tragically murdered. One of those injured in the attack was former Jacksonville University wide receiver Rodney Sumter Jr.
Sumter Jr. was working as a bartender at the club during the attack. Sumter was shot and is having surgery on Monday. His mother, Lenita, sent a text message to Action News Jax’s Paige Kelton offering an update on his surgery.
“Good morning. I’m humbly grateful to God for commanding another morning on behalf of Rodney and the other surviving victims. My prayers go out to the families of the deceased and pray that God will encamp His angels around them to comfort them in this tragic time of grief. My son is prepping for surgery right now. Pray our strength.”
During the final year of his career with the Dolphins, which ran from 2008-2010, Sumter caught 24 passes for 456 yards and seven touchdowns.
Luckily for Sumter Jr., he should be able to make a full recovery. Campus Sports would like to send their well wishes to him and again send our condolences to all families affected in the terrible attack.
