Video: Byron Buxton throws out Mike Trout with 99 mph throw from centerfield

It is not very often that Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout gets thrown out. However, he met the arm of Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton Tuesday night as he tried to score from second base.

With two men on, Albert Pujols cracked a roller through the infield and to Buxton as Trout rounded third and tried to score. What the Angels didn’t know is that Buxton has a cannon for an arm as he threw out the opposing outfield from 240 feet away.

A little bit of sports science shows that Buxton’s throw from centerfield reached nearly 100 miles per hour, clocking out at 99.4.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to many baseball fans, especially those that root for the Twins. Byron Buxton, the second overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, went 10-1 as a pitcher during his senior year at Appling County High School in south Georgia and clocked a 99-mph fastball at the time.

This is the first time Trout was thrown out since mid-April, near the beginning of the season. So, it is okay to be pretty impressed with what Buxton did.

“Scouting reports will tell you that [Buxton]’s got a high-end Major League throwing arm,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said. “It’s near the top shelf. You’re not going to see Mike Trout get thrown out too often on a base hit up the middle, even though the ball was scorched.”
