Duke’s Jayson Tatum named Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year

Five-star recruit Jayson Tatum is heading to Durham, North Carolina to begin his collegiate basketball career with the Duke Blue Devils. But first, he had one more piece of hardware to claim to commemorate his impressive high school career.

On Tuesday night, Tatum was honored as the Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year.

Prior to joining Duke, Tatum emerged as a star at at Chaminade College Prep in Creve Coeur, Missouri. During his senior year of high school, Tatum averaged 29.5 points and 9.1 rebounds en route to leading his team to a state title.

“Dad, I love you,”‘ Tatum said as he accepted the award, as transcribed by NBC Sports. “Mom, I’m the biggest momma’s boy in the world and I’m not going to change anytime soon.”

Two years ago, the Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year award was handed out to Karl-Anthony Towns, who went on to become a No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Tatum can only hope to follow that same path.
