Florida loses WR Dre Massey for season to knee injury

On the first play of the 2016 college football season, the Florida Gators lost a player that was expected to be a huge piece of their offense going into the season. Dre Massey went down with a knee injury and now it has been announced that it was serious enough to keep him out the rest of the season.

Massey was a top junior college transfer ahead of the 2016 season and the Gators expected him to be a versatile piece for their offense this year. Head coach Jim McElwain confirmed that Massey would be out the remainder of the season after suffering the injury, which he played on up until halftime.

“Played all the way through it until halftime on something that needs to be surgically repaired,” McElwain said. “Big loss that we’re going to need some guys to step up. He’ll get that operated on when the swelling goes down. He’ll be out for the year.”

Dre Massey transferred in from Holmes Community College in Mississippi over the summer. He played just about every position imaginable, from wide receiver to punter, and made some impressive statistics in 2015.

He caught 21 passes for 548 yards and six touchdowns, and carried 59 times for 452 yards and three scores. He also punted three times for an averaged of 22.3 yards and threw three incomplete passes.
