Texas A&M Fined $50K for Player Faking Injury in Recent Game

The SEC slapped Texas A&M with a $50,000 fine Tuesday after officials caught the Aggies red-handed in a fake injury scheme during their nail-biter against Arkansas. Head coach Mike Elko also received a public reprimand after the National Coordinator for Football Officiating reviewed footage showing A&M coaches directing a player to drop to the turf.

The incident occurred with just under 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s shootout, right after the Razorbacks had moved the chains and were threatening inside the Aggies’ 10-yard line. That’s when defensive back Tyreek Chappell mysteriously collapsed after coaches from the A&M sideline were caught “signaling demonstratively to the player, pointing to the ground.”

The evidence was damning.

Review footage confirmed Chappell hadn’t been touched on the play, and he miraculously recovered in time to return just two plays later. The SEC didn’t hesitate to drop the hammer, determining this was a clear violation of rules against faking injuries to slow down opposing offenses.

Despite the controversy, the Aggies escaped with a 45-42 win over Arkansas, preserving their perfect record. Texas A&M remains one of only six unbeaten teams left standing in college football.

The crackdown on fake injuries has become a major point of emphasis across college football this season. Teams have been put on notice — the days of players mysteriously dropping with “cramps” to slow down high-tempo offenses are numbered.

If the Aggies try this stunt again, they’ll face a doubled fine of $100,000. A third violation would trigger an automatic one-game suspension for Elko and potential penalties for other staff members involved.

This marks one of the first times the NCAA has publicly fined a program for this increasingly scrutinized tactic that’s long been a controversial part of college football’s gamesmanship.
