Georgia governor Nathan Deal has vetoed the “religious liberty” bill passed by the state legislature after multiple gay rights groups as well as the NFL and Georgia’s Atlanta Falcons criticized it, per a report from Greg Bluestein of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“Our people work side by side without regard to the color of our skin, or the religion we adhere to,” said Deal, a two-term Republican. “We are working to make life better for our families and our communities. That is the character of Georgia. I intend to do my part to keep it that way,” he said. “For that reason, I will veto HB 757.”
Georgia’s state legislature drew up the bill in direct response to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last June that nullified the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as strictly between a man and a woman. Since the bill’s passing, a number of businesses threatened to pull investments from the state. Said businesses include Apple, Time Warner and Disney.
But the fact of the matter is that regardless of how one may feel on the subject, Deal did the right thing. He had to do not only what was best for the state of Georgia, but what was right. Last I checked, going against the United States Supreme Court was the exact opposite of that.
