At a time of year when we far too often write about the seedier side of college football, it is unfortunate to write about Mike Edwards, a promising Kentucky recruit who has to put his Lexington career on hold while he recovers from shoulder surgery.
Edwards, a three-star safety according to 247 Sports, was expected to compete from playing time as a true freshman, but instead won’t be able to enrol or play for the Wildcats while he convalesces.
One of the top safeties coming out of high school, Edwards played both sides of the ball, as well as special teams, showing a nose not just for the ball, but the endzone too. While it was unlikely that he would start this season, Kentucky may have found it difficult to keep him off the field.
If any Wildcats are concerned that Edwards may be scooped up in another team’s 2015 class, he has acknowledged that he intends to play for the Wildcats when he is ready to go.
