SEC Media Days began in Hoover, Alabama on Monday, July 14. South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier met with the media around 10 a.m. the next day to talk about the upcoming season.
Spurrier is entering his 10th year as the South Carolina head coach, becoming the only coach in SEC history to coach two SEC teams for 10+ years, University of Florida being the other.
Spurrier is 77-39 overall and 41-31 in the SEC in nine years at South Carolina
When asked about this team’s potential, Spurrier said, “We have a pretty good team I think. Most of the magazines have us about nine, 10, 11 in the country, I think. Hopefully, we can live up to those predictions.”
“We’ve beaten the champion three years in a row but been 6-2 and they’ve been 7-1,” he says. Spurrier says a majority of fans would rather beat archrival Clemson than win the SEC. Personally, he’d rather win the SEC.
In classic Spurrier fashion, the Ol’ Ball Coach was very entertaining. When asked about his thoughts of Stephen Garcia joining the media (Saturdays Down South), Spurrier said, “As soon as I see Stephen, I’m going to tell him he looked like he joined Duck Dynasty,” referring to Garcia’s long hair and beard.
Spurrier took the opportunity to say that he thinks Garcia has a future in media, while simultaneously taking a laughable dig at the press.
“Heck, you guys made it,” Spurrier said.
Also joining Spurrier at Media Day were starting quarterback Dylan Thompson, guard A.J. Cann and tackle J.T.Surratt.
The Gamecocks look to build on their past success, but fans everywhere are hoping this will be the year they can break down the door and make a statement in the SEC.
