UW Extends Lindsay Meggs

On July 14th, University of Washington Athletic Director, Scott Woodward, announced that head baseball coach, Lindsay Meggs, would receive a 6-year extension worth $2.2 million.

The 2014 Huskies’ campaign included the program’s first NCAA tournament bid since 2004 and saw a program-record eight players selected in last month’s MLB Draft. In addition, the team finished 47-17-1 which marked the 5th time that the school has reached the 40-win mark since the Huskies began its baseball program in 1901.

The extension entails that that Meggs will make $275,004 in the first year of the deal and $425,004 in the 6th and final year of the deal. If Meggs is still the coach on June 30th, 2019, then he will receive a “longevity” bonus worth $125,000. The contract also includes a potential bonus of $10,000 for a Pac-12 championship and $50,000 for a national championship.

“Personally, and on behalf of my staff, I’d like to thank Scott Woodward and the University of Washington for continuing to invest in Husky Baseball,” said Meggs.  “I’m excited to have the opportunity to lead this program for the next six years and beyond, and I’m also excited that our entire coaching staff will return next year intact.”

Last season, the Huskies finished with a Pac-12 record of 21-9 and captured the program’s highest-ever national ranking, coming in as high as 5th in the national polls. In addition, Washington finished the season ranked 4th nationally in fielding percentage (.982), 29th in WHIP (1.23), 39th in ERA (3.11) and 43rd in Walks Allowed Per Nine Innings (2.94).

Over the course of Meggs coaching career, he has compiled a record of 140-139-1 in Seattle and a 755-446-5 overall record in 21 seasons as a head coach. While at Division-II Chico State University in California, Meggs led the Wildcats to national championships in 1997 and 1999. As a student-athlete attending UCLA under head coach Gary Adams, Meggs started at third base each of his four years and in 1984, he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 15th round. His coaching career began in 1988 when he served as an assistant at De Anza College and besides his career with the Huskies, Meggs has also held coaching positions at California Lutheran University, Oxnard College, Long Beach City College, and Indiana State.

“I have always maintained that our success as a baseball program depends on our relationships.  And it’s exciting for me to come to work every day knowing that the University of Washington has the same goals that we do as a program, and that is to get to Omaha and to be the last team standing.”
