Oklahoma Will Submit Baker Mayfield’s Appeal

Oklahoma will submit quarterback Baker Mayfield’s petition to become eligible for the 2014 season.  Mayfield was the first freshman walk on to start at a BCS school, Texas Tech, but was not granted a scholarship following the season and subsequently enrolled at Oklahoma for the spring semester.

The appeal challenges the NCAA’s transfer rule forcing a player to sit a season before being able to play again.

Mayfield has hired Jim Darnell, who dealt with the eligibility problems of Johnny Manziel, to represent him in hopes of resolving the issue and earning immediate eligibility. The Big 12 freshman of the year has had his request to transfer blocked several times by Texas Tech, who hold the keys to Mayfield’s eligibility.

A season ago, Mayfield threw for 2,315 yard and 12 touchdowns, however, is expected to back up starter Trevor Knight.
