College of Charleston Closes In On New Head BB Coach

The College of Charleston is reportedly close to hiring their next men’s head basketball coach.  The position opened August 5 after former head coach Doug Wojcik was fired in response allegations of verbal abuse. Wocjik had three years remaining on his existing contract before he was let go amid controversy about the accusations.

The Cougars administration interviewed six different coaches this past week in hopes of filling the vacancy by the start of the school year.  The top candidate is alum Anthony Johnson, who played for the team from 1992 to 1997 before making the jump to the NBA.  Other contenders include former Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz; former George Washington head coach Karl Hobbs; Virginia assistant Ritchie McKay; Clemson assistant Earl Grant; and Wofford head coach Mike Young.

Charleston knows there is a short timeline to get a coach by the start of the season, but it has been made clear throughout the process that they aren’t willing to do so at the expense of due diligence and full confidence in their selection.
