Florida State Investigating Jameis Winston

Florida State has launched its own  investigation regarding the rape allegations made by a female  student in 2012.

Although Winston was never charged, the women’s attorney, John Clune confirmed to USA Today that the university interviewed the accuser last month.

“They assured us that the Title IX process was going to move forward,” stated  Clune, a Title IX attorney representing the woman. “The interview went pretty well. I think it was a positive experience, and everyone felt like the university was taking it very seriously.”

“We expect there will be code of conduct charges that will be brought,” he said.

Title IX requires requires universities to conduct their own investigations regarding sexual and violence matters, regardless if there is a criminal investigation occurring.

Clune also stated that two other people were interviewed, although he is unsure if Winston was one of them. He also told USA Today he believes the university will charge Winston for violating the school’s conduct policy.

“There’s no basis not to bring those charges now.” stated Clune.

Atlanta based lawyer David Cornwell, who is an advisor for Jameis Winston, told USA Today that he believes the university is following federal rules and the end result will be no different than the prosecutor’s decision to not press charges.

Recently, Florida State launched the “kNOw MORE” campaign, aimed to educate students, faculty, and staff of the university regarding sexual assault, consent,  and prevention. It also offers resources and counseling for sexual assault victims. The university is currently under investigation by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights due to how the case was handled.

Head coach Jimbo Fisher is focused on football, not the investigation.

“No, this team moves on,” Fisher stated when asked whether this would be a distraction to the team. “I have no idea how that’ll go, what it’s about. That’s for other people to find out. We’re just here playing ball.”
