Historically, the Texas Longhorns have been among the premier football programs in all of college football, and so have the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
While the two programs don’t necessarily have a rivalry, we’re talking about two of the major fan bases in all of college football, and two teams that were set to have another home-and-home several years down the road.
Notre Dame decided to cancel their home and home series set to take place in 2019-20. The Fighting Irish cited a scheduling conflict as the main reason behind the decision. The Longhorns will be awarded 150,000 in ramifications for the cancellation.
The next time the two teams will square off will be September 15, 2015 in South Bend before they play each other the following year in Austin on September 3, 2016. Recently, Notre Dame and Georgia agreed to a home and home for the 2017 and 2019 seasons so immediately fans saw the writing on the wall that the previously agreed deal was on thin ice.
Also, the Fighting Irish have backed out of future games with longtime rival Michigan, ending the rivalry this month. The two teams do not have any future games scheduled.
Currently, Notre Dame holds a 3-0 record entering this weekend’s prime time game against the Syracuse Orange; Texas is 1-2 and will travel to Lawrence to face Charlie Weis’ Kansas Jayhawks.
