When Charlie Weis took over the head coaching position for the Kansas Jayhawks, he hoped to revive a once promising career and help the Jayhawks return to relevance in a Big 12 conference. He drastically altered the gameplan on both sides of the ball, and offered restoration of a proud football tradition.
Two years have passed and a 6-22 record has forced Kansas’ hand, and the school has decided to relieve Weis of his duties. Weis has now been fired from his second straight head coaching position – both times before his contract was up – and this decision could be a major hit to his future endeavors.
The last straw in the administration’s cap was the 23-0 loss to Big 12 rival Texas the weekend.
In the meanwhile, Clint Bowen was named the team’s interim coach for when the 2-2 Jayhawks take on West Virginia this coming weekend, and potentially longer.
“I normally do not favor changing coaches mid-season, but I believe we have talented coaches and players in this program, and I think this decision gives our players the best chance to begin making progress right away,” athletic director Shaehon Zenger said.
