2015 2K Classic Headliners Announced

The 2K Sports video game franchise stopped its production of college basketball games back in 2008. However, the electronics outfit has not removed itself from the college sports world. Beginning back in 2012, the 2K Sports Classic  has become an annual event in which multiple teams compete at  Madison Square Garden during early season competition.

Last season saw a Connecticut victory in the final bout over Indiana. Not the only tournament UConn would go on to win.

This season, we will see four top programs competing, followed by four not-so-top tier programs as well. The opening night of the tournament will see two marquee games, as Texas will take on Iowa, and Syracuse will take on California. The entire tournament will be televised on ESPN, and will provide an incredible opportunity for these four programs to assert themselves on a national level early on in the season.

Other members of this year’s tournament are North Dakota State, Hampton, Alcorn State and Kennesaw State.

Duke, Wisconsin, Georgetown and VCU will be the headliners of next year’s tournament. The magnitude of the programs involved will undoubtedly bring an incredibly high level of attention to the tournament, with Duke and Wisconsin entering as pre-season favorites this year to make deep runs in March. Not to mention, Georgetown’s persistent presence in the national scene despite recent struggles as well as the postseason success that VCU has found under Shaka Smart.

The most important aspect of this tournament is the beneficiary of the competition, the Wounded Warrior Project. The WWP benefits those injured in events following the unfortunate tragedy that transpired on September 11, 2001.

This year’s tournament, which can be seen entirely on ESPN, begins November 20.
