Virginia Tech DT Luther Maddy Out For Season

Virginia Tech preseason All-ACC selection Luther Maddy will miss the remainder of the season after a series of lingering knee issues.  Last month, the senior defensive tackle sustained a torn meniscus and was expected to be ready in about two to four weeks.  Instead, Maddy has been able to practice on a limited basis and has not been able to return to game action.  The team announced that Maddy will undergo another knee procedure, but the details surrounding what exactly doctors are looking for remains unclear.

A season ago, Maddy was a dominant force along the defensive line and was voted a third team All- ACC selection by the conference coaches.  During 2013, Maddy recorded 55 tackles, 13.5 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks and could have deemed himself eligible for the NFL draft.  He, however, decided to return to school in hopes of bolstering his draft stock only to suffer the devastating knee injury.  It was first reported by The Washington Post that Maddy would apply to the NCAA for a medical hardship allowing him to play one more season with the Hokies.

Maddy appeared in four games this season and will be replaced by sophomore Nigel Williams.  Williams has performed admirably in Maddy’s absence, but Virginia Tech has struggled to a disappointing 4-3 record. Fresh off of a 21-16 loss to Pittsburgh, the team will suit up to face the Miami Hurricanes Thursday night.
