QB John Wolford To Start For Demon Deacons

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons’ disappointing 2014 season has a small glimmer of hope, as freshman quarterback John Wolford will be ready to play versus Boston College this weekend.  In the true freshman’s seventh career game, he completed 9 of 14 passes for 72 yards, a touchdown and an interception.  Wolford looked very promising in his first game action of the season until the second quarter when he was hit from the blind side, driven into the turf before being held out for the remainder of the team’s 30-7 loss to Syracuse.

Head coach Dave Clawson was optimistic about how the team played prior to the injury.

“For the first 20 minutes of the game, it was the best we looked all year, in terms of having a run-pass balance, we had our best drive of the year,” Clawson said. “You hate to go back to one play, but the one play where we slid the protection the wrong way, our quarterback gets hit in terms of pick-six, and he gets knocked out of the game for the day.’’

Wolford said several times on the sideline that he hoped to return to the game, but Coach Clawson and the entire staff had the big picture in mind when making the final decision. The next day, Wolford continued to be symptom-free and has officially been ruled healthy to play against the Eagles.

In Wolford’s first season at the helm, he has thrown for 1,135 yards, seven touchdowns and 12 interceptions, but has shown the necessary signs of future star in his freshman campaign.
