Michigan’s Devin Funchess Off To NFL

The Michigan Wolverines struggled to a 5-7 record this season. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, one of their lone bright spots is departing for the NFL.

Wide receiver/tight end Devin Funchess let it be known that he plans to forgo his senior season and enter the 2015 NFL draft. Funchess finished his junior campaign with 62 receptions for 733 yards and four touchdowns. For his career, he leaves the Maize and Blue with 126 receptions for 1,715 yards 15 touchdowns.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to play in the NFL, and I am prepared to take the next step in my journey,” stated Funchess. “I want to personally thank coach Brady Hoke and his staff. I’ve learned life and character lessons from them, and they have helped me become a better person and man.”

At 6’5, 230 pounds, Funchess possesses the size and unique skill set that will should translate well into the NFL. After playing tight end in his first two seasons in Ann Arbor, Funchess moved to wide receiver for his junior campaign. Playing both positions can only help his draft stock moving forward.

As bleak as the offense was this past season, it is no surprise to see the talented receiver decide leave early to purse his NFL dream. Furthermore, head coach Brady Hoke was relieved of his duties after another disappointing season. Hoke’s record at Michigan dipped each season after a successful 2011 campaign.

The Wolverines are targeting some big names in their coaching search such as Jim Harbaugh and Les Miles. Neither are expected to take the job but that is not stopping Michigan from trying.

It will be interesting to see who ends up as the next head coach in Ann Arbor. Whoever it is must find a way to replace the talented Funchess.
