Former TCU DE Devonte Fields Will Play at Louisville

Former TCU defensive end Devonte Fields has found a new home.

After garnering the Big 12 Defensive Player the Year and Big 12 Freshman of the Year awards in 2012, Fields announced via his Twitter account that he will playing for head coach Bobby Petrino and the Louisville Cardinals.

Fields was dismissed from the TCU program after being charged with a misdemeanor assault where he allegedly pointed a gun at his ex-girlfriend. He spent this past season at Trinity Valley Community College in Austin, Texas where he recorded 61 tackles and 6.5 sacks.  Trinity Valley finished the season with a flawless 12-0 record.

In 2012, Fields had a freshman campaign to remember. The Texas native tallied 53 tackles (18.5 for loss) and ten sacks. He led the Big 12 in tackles for loss per game and was third in sacks. He also forced two fumbles and recorded one interception.

He appeared in only three games in the 2013 season due to injury.

One can only wonder what Fields could have done against Baylor in TCU’s only loss this past season which ultimately kept them out of the first ever College Football Playoff. The Horned Frogs finished the year with a 12-1 record and shared the Big 12 title with Baylor.

Under the guidance of defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, Louisville’s defense will only get better with the addition of Fields. In 2014, the Cardinals boasted one of the top defenses in the country.

Louisville finished the 2014 season with the No. 6 ranked total defense, surrendering 308.5 yards per game. Furthermore, the Cardinals finished No. 9 in sacks and No. 26 in tackles for loss.

Fields’ unique talent and experience will help the Cardinals improve on those numbers in 2015.

The talented lineman will have two seasons of eligibility remaining and will enroll in the summer.
