Jerry Tarkanian Passes Away at 84

Sad news out of the hoops community came Wednesday as it was announced that former coach Jerry Tarkanian passed away.

The news was broken by Tarkanian’s son, Danny, during the day that the Hall of Famer had died, after it had been announced earlier in the week that his health was “critical.” He was 84-years-old.

Tarkanian was hospitalized on Monday with a “respiratory ailment” however it wasn’t the first sign of his failing health. This was the third time in a 10 month span that he had been admitted to the hospital–the first time in April due to a heart attack, and the second in November with pneumonia.

Among his years in the basketball world, Tarkanian is most noteably recognized for leading UNLV to an NCAA title in 1990. At the time of his retirement in 2002, he held a 729-201 Division I record over a 31 year span, ranking him 12th all-time.
