Jackie Robinson Day is, easily, the most celebrated day of the baseball season. The last few seasons have seen major league teams rocking “42” emblazened jerseys and featuring a tribute video on the jumbotron in honor of one of the game’s–and all of sports for that matter–greatest heros.
Now, UCLA is getting into the mix in a big, big way.
Bruins Athletics announced Wednesday that the Pac-12 program has “teamed” up with Adidas to create the ultimate Throwback unis in honor of Jackie Robinson.
What better way to celebrate a legend who attended UCLA from 1939-1941, before going on to sport #42 for the Brooklyn Dodgers? (Of course UCLA was part of the Pacific Coast Division back then, but we won’t split hairs.) UCLA, also, retired his #42 jersey.
The Bruins baseball squad will rock 40s style cream jerseys with a classic navy script across the chest. The navy hats worn, featuring a large “B” on it, are “designed to have a look and feel of a classic hat from that era.”
But wait–there’s more. Like Cinderella at the ball, players will wear specialty kicks for the occasion. The blue-and-tan cleats will feature the UCLA writing and logo on the outside and–drumroll please–“an insole that features newspaper clippings from Robinson’s playing days.”
UCLA is planning to wear the Jackie Robinson attire in their Thursday game against the California Golden Bears.
