The Texas Longhorns quarterback competition is starting to heat up.
According to a report on 247 Sports, Texas head coach Charlie Strong is becoming increasingly impressed with redshirt freshman signal-caller Jerrod Heard.
In fact, despite the belief that the job would be junior Tyrone Swoopes’ to lose, Strong says that Heard is “closing the gap.” Both Swoopes and Heard will take snaps with the Longhorns’ first-team offense during this weekend’s Orange-White game.
“Jerrod has taken tremendous strides here in the last week or so,” Strong said. “He’s really closed the gap, so it’s going to be interesting to get through Saturday and get to fall camp.
“He’s so athletic, and I always say he’s one of those guys who’s so light on his feet. When the pressure is coming to him he can get himself away from the rush and create plays on the perimeter with his feet.”
It’s not just the athleticism, though.
Strong also praised Jerrod Heard’s improvement throwing the ball and the fact that he has seemingly become much more comfortable in the offense in such a short time.
“It’s just that he’s so much more comfortable and that’s why I said he’s closing the gap,” Strong said of Heard. “He’s so comfortable back there now and everyone is seeing it. Even his teammates are seeing it.”
This will be an interesting battle to watch as we continue to get closer to the season.
